Make sure you’re using the right bank code because if you provide the wrong digits, your remittance might not be delivered. Worse, you might even get charged a hefty fee for providing incorrect SWIFT Codes or making typo errors in the transaction.

I remember one time when I was still working abroad and I sent a wire transfer to the Philippines. Apparently I used the wrong SWIFT Code (which I got from some unreliable source on the internet) but my originating bank still accepted the money transfer request. I was told the remittance would be completed in 2-3 days and I thought everything would be just fine.

But 3 days later, my recipient in the Philippines told me the money was still not yet deposited in his bank account. The very next day, I went to my remittance bank to inquire and that’s when they told me that the money transfer did not go through!

My remittance bank told me the wire transfer was rejected because I gave the wrong SWIFT Code. Worse, they charged me $10.00 for the failed transaction!

Yes, it was my fault that I got the wrong information from an unreliable website back then, so don’t make the same mistake now. That’s the reason we made this list — containing bank Swift Codes or BIC of financial institutions in the Philippines — which we individually verified to be correct, so that you won’t have to experience the same mistake I did!

What is SWIFT Code?

SWIFT codes are unique identification numbers assigned to a bank or a financial institution around the world.

Why is it called SWIFT Code? It’s called SWIFT, not because it means your remittance will be quick, but because SWIFT is actually an acronym for the “Society for Worldwide Interbank Financial Telecommunication” — an organization that provides a network for institutions worldwide to send and receive information about financial transactions.

How is SWIFT code different from BIC? Well, SWIFT code is actually just the more commonly used term for the Bank Identifier Code (BIC), and the two are pretty much the same. The codes are typically used when transferring money between banks (particularly for international remittances and wire transfers) and also for the exchange of messages between banks.

A typical BIC or SWIFT Code consists of 8 or 11 characters. The 8-digit code usually refers to the Headquarters or Head Office of the bank, while the 11-digit code is intended for a specific unit or branch of the bank.

The format of the 8-digit or 11-digit SWIFT code (or BIC) typically means:

• First 4 letters – Bank Code
• Next 2 letters – Country Code
• Next 2 characters – Location Code (may consist of letters and numbers)
• Last 3 characters – Branch Code (these characters are optional; may consist of letters and numbers; if “XXX” is used, the BIC / Swift Code refers to the Main Branch or Head Office)

Majority of international banks adopt and use SWIFT codes for interbank messages and wire transfers. According to the SWIFT Network website, they connect more than 11,000 banks, financial institutions, and corporate customers spanning 200 countries and territories worldwide.

What’s the SWIFT Code of Philippine banks?

Here’s a list of the official SWIFT Codes of top Philippine banks. We verified these to be correct by checking the official websites of banks and even calling them to confirm the information.

What’s the SWIFT code of my branch?

If you’re unable to find the SWIFT Code or BIC Number for your bank branch, you simply need to use the provided SWIFT code of the Main Branch and the wire transfer will go through to your intended branch.

Again, the SWIFT code you need to use is the Main Branch SWIFT code as provided in our list above, regardless if your branch is located in Luzon, Visayas, or Mindanao.

I tried this before, I wanted to send a wire transfer to a BDO account in a branch in Cebu, and I can’t find the SWIFT Code of that branch (because they have none!). So I just used the SWIFT Code of BDO’s head office, which is BNORPHMM, and yes the remittance got processed without a hitch!

BDO’s SWIFT Code or BIC Number

What’s the SWIFT Code of Banco de Oro (BDO) in the Philippines? BDO’s SWIFT Code is BNORPHMM.

What about the SWIFT Code for a specific BDO branch? There’s none, because there’s just one SWIFT Code for all BDO branches, and what you sholuld use is the Head Office BDO SWIFT Code which is BNORPHMM.

For BDO Network Bank, however, the SWIFT Code to use is ONNRPHM1.

BPI’s SWIFT Code or BIC Number

What’s the SWIFT Code of BPI (Bank of the Philippine Islands)? BPI’s SWIFT Code is BOPIPHMM.

What about a specific branch of BPI? Again, there’s actually just one SWIFT Code for the entire bank and that’s the Head Office BPI SWIFT Code, which is BOPIPHMM.

For BPI Family Savings Bank, the SWIFT Code is also BOPIPHMM. This is a result of the merger of the two banks — dubbed OneBPI — with parent company BPI as the surviving or remaining entity.

For BPI BanKo (BPI Direct BanKo Inc.), we can’t find this information online so we called BPI’s hotline and inquired with their customer service representative. We were told that the SWIFT Code of BPI Banko is also BOPIPHMM, the same as the main BPI SWIFT Code.

Metrobank’s SWIFT Code or BIC Number

What’s the SWIFT Code of Metrobank in the Philippines? It’s MBTCPHMMXXX.

There’s no other SWIFT Code for a specific branch of Metrobank. For all Metrobank branches anywhere in the Philippines, just use the Head Office Metrobank SWIFT Code which is MBTCPHMMXXX.

For the SWIFT Code of Metrobank Card Corp., meanwhile, use MCCEPHM1.

LandBank’s SWIFT Code or BIC Number

What’s the SWIFT Code of LandBank of the Philippines? LandBank’s SWIFT Code is TLBPPHMM.

There are SWIFT Codes for other branches of Land Bank in Davao, Iloilo, General Santos City, Cebu, and Quezon City. Check them in the list below.

For all other branches of Land Bank which are not shown on the list, just use the Head Office LandBank SWIFT Code, which is TLBPPHMM.

SWIFT Code of GCash and Digital Banks

The SWIFT Code of GCash, the popular mobile e-wallet in the Philippines, is GLTEPHMT.

The SWIFT Code of Tonik Digital Bank is TODGPHM2.

For Maya Bank, the Swift Code to use is MYYAPHM2.

Again take note, if you can’t find the SWIFT code of a specific branch, the SWIFT code to use is the Head Office SWIFT Code of the bank, as shown below. Your intended recipient will still receive the remittance as long as you use the SWIFT Code of the main branch or head office of the bank.

Swift Code vs. BIC, IBAN, ABA, Fedwire?

What’s IBAN and how is it different from SWIFT Code? Are ABA and Fedwire the same? More importantly, when are these number used?

At first glance, all these codes sound confusing but to simplify, the BIC, IBAN, ABA, and Fedwire numbers are mere codes used by banks to communicate to each other in order to facilitate payments and transfers of money.

We explain their differences below.

What is BIC (Business Identifier Code)?

The BIC (Business Identifier Code), previously called “Bank Identifier Codes”, is just another name for SWIFT Codes. It started in Brussels, Belgium in 1973, initially supported by 200+ banks, but has now grown to more than 11,000 partners worldwide in the SWIFT network.

As mentioned earlier, the BIC or SWIFT code is generally comprised of 8 characters. The extended code of 11 characters (with the last three digits added) enables payments to be directed to a specific office, branch, or unit of the institution.

The BIC or SWIFT Code is typically the default code needed to facilitate wire transfers. If you’re asked to provide a wire transfer code — and it doesn’t explicitly refer to IBAN or ABA or Fedwire — you’ll be safe using the SWIFT code.

What is IBAN (International Bank Account Number)?

The IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is currently the standard for payment codes among banks within the European Union (EU), although other non-European countries have also started to adopt it including countries in the Middle East and in the Caribbean. As of 2020, more than 77 countries (primarily in Europe) are using the IBAN numbering system.

The IBAN may consist of up to 34 alphanumeric characters containing all routing information needed to process a payment from one bank to another. This routing code contains key bank account details, such as:

• Country code – two (2) characters
• Check digits – two (2) numbers, which can be validated by the bank to confirm the check’s integrity before payment processing;
• Basic Bank Account Number (BBAN) – up to 30 alphanumeric characters, which contain the branch code (also called sort codes) identifying the specific branch receiving the payment and the beneficiary’s account number

What’s the IBAN of Philippine banks? Since the IBAN is primarily used in Europe, banks in the Philippines do NOT use and do NOT have IBAN numbers.

What is Fedwire?

Fedwire (also called the Federal Reserve Wire Network) is a real-time funds transfer system used by Federal Reserve Banks in the United States to electronically settle payments among member institutions within the same day. It is operated by member banks of the US Federal Reserve, allowing real-time payments among Fed banks and other participating institutions. The participating institutions must be depository financial institutions in the US which maintain an account with the Federal Reserve.

What’s the Fedwire number of Philippine banks? Philippine banks do NOT have Fedwire numbers since the Fedwire is primarily used only by American banks transacting with the US Federal Reserve.

What is ABA Routing Transit Number?

The ABA Routing Number or Routing Transit Number (RTN) was developed by the American Bankers Association (ABA) in the United States and consists of nine (9) digits which identify the bank or financial institution responsible for the payment or settlement of a check.

The ABA Routing Number typically appears at the bottom of negotiable instruments, including checks, to identify the bank where the check payment will be drawn. In recent years, the ABA RTNs have evolved to identify not only the bank which will settle the check, but also also participants in electronic funds transfer, automated clearing houses (ACH), and online banking.

What’s the ABA Routing Number of Philippine banks? As you can expect, banks in the Philippines do NOT use ABA Routing Transit Numbers (RTN) since ABA is for the exclusive use of American banks maintaining an account with the US Federal Reserve.

What is BRSTN or Routing Numbers (for Upwork or Paypal)?

What about the BRSTN code or Bank Routing Symbol Transit Number?

If you’re using Upwork and it’s asking for the BRSTN or Routing Number, you’ll have to use the following Philippine Bank BRSTN which is similar with the Paypal Bank Code required in Paypal bank transactions.

We checked with Upwork and the following BRSTN or Routing Nos. should be used. As for Paypal, these are the Bank Codes to use as well.
